How much does online exam software cost in India? (2026 pricing guide)

What online exam and proctoring platforms actually charge in India in 2026: published prices, hidden proctoring credits, entry bundles, and the per-candidate cost that follows.

Short answer

There are effectively two markets. The credible enterprise platforms (Mercer Mettl, Talview, Wheebox, ExamOnline, Think Exam enterprise) publish no price at all; you get a quote. The platforms that do publish prices start around ₹2,360 per month at the low end and run past ₹11,000 per month for a US-priced hiring tool, with proctoring usually metered separately. Once you divide by candidates, most buyers land somewhere between ₹25 and ₹250 per candidate session, and the spread is almost entirely about how proctoring is billed.

What do exam software vendors in India actually publish?

Very little, and that is the first finding. The vendors most likely to appear on a university or enterprise shortlist are quote-only. That is not necessarily bad faith, since enterprise deals genuinely do vary, but it means you cannot budget before you have spent weeks in a sales cycle, and it makes total cost of ownership hard to audit. Pricing-research site PricingNow specifically flags hidden-cost and TCO risk on Mercer Mettl for this reason.

What actually drives the cost of exam software?

Five variables explain almost every price difference on that table.

  • Proctoring, metered separately. This is the single biggest distortion. SpeedExam illustrates it cleanly: the entry plan is $20 per month but includes only 50 proctoring credits. Run proctored exams at any real volume and you are on the ~$125 per month tier, a 6× jump for the same software. A headline price that excludes proctoring is not a price for a secure exam.
  • Seats versus sessions. Hiring-oriented tools charge per recruiter seat plus test credits. Exam-oriented tools charge per candidate session. If you have three staff running exams for 5,000 students, per-seat pricing is cheap and per-session pricing is expensive; if you have 40 faculty running exams for 300 students, the arithmetic inverts.
  • Entry bundles and subscription floors. An Eklavvya-style ₹30,000 credit bundle or a Conduct Exam-style ₹2,360 monthly floor is a fixed cost that does not care whether you ran an exam. On a seasonal calendar (semester-end, annual certification), a floor is pure waste in the off-months.
  • Currency. A $135/month plan is roughly ₹11,000+ per month before FX movement, GST treatment or card fees. USD pricing also means your budget moves with the exchange rate.
  • Everything outside the licence. Implementation, integration with your SIS or LMS, item-bank migration, training, support SLAs and per-exam managed services routinely exceed the licence in year one, and they are exactly what quote-only pricing hides.

How do you compare vendors on a per-candidate basis?

Convert everything to cost per completed candidate session, including proctoring, at your real annual volume. This is the only number that survives contact with a budget committee. The worked example below assumes an institution running 500 proctored sessions per month, which is a mid-sized department or a certification body with a monthly cycle.

ModelAnnual cost at 500 sessions / monthPer sessionNotes

Our modelling, using the published prices in the table above and an assumed 6,000 proctored sessions a year. Enterprise quote-only vendors cannot be modelled by definition. Treat these as a comparison framework, not a quotation.

What does XAM charge?

XAM by Ankor, an assessment platform, publishes its price: from ₹16 per candidate session, which is Lite at ₹799 a month for 50 sessions. There is a free tier that requires no card, and the paid tiers are session-metered, so the plan you sit on tracks the volume you actually run.

PlanPriceIncluded sessionsEffective per session
Free₹0 forever20 sessions (lifetime)₹0
Lite₹799 / month (₹7,990 / year)50 sessions / month≈ ₹16 monthly · ≈ ₹13 on annual billing
Pro₹1,999 / month (₹19,990 / year)100 sessions / month₹20 monthly · ≈ ₹17 on annual billing
EnterpriseCustomUnlimited, dedicated instanceNegotiated; the self-serve rate is the anchor
XAM published pricing, 2026. Annual billing is 10× the monthly rate (two months free). Proctoring, auto-evaluation and branded reports are included in the session price rather than metered as credits.

The point of publishing is not that ₹16 is unbeatable in every scenario. At very high volume, a negotiated enterprise contract may well land lower. The point is that you can see it before you talk to anyone, and that proctoring is not a second invoice. When the credible enterprise players publish no price at all and the transparent players charge in USD at multiples of a per-session cost once proctoring is factored in, a published INR rate is the useful anchor for the whole market.

Which pricing model should you choose?

Fewer than ~50 exams a year, seasonalFree tier, then the smallest session planBundles and big floors bill you for months you do not use
Steady monthly volume, small teamSession-based monthly planPredictable, and utilisation stays high enough to justify the floor
Hiring assessments with many recruitersPer-seat hiring platformSeat pricing amortises across high test volume per recruiter
University or board, tens of thousands of candidatesNegotiated enterprise contractVolume justifies an RFP, but benchmark the quote against a published per-session rate
Quizzes with no integrity requirementA quiz tool ($9–20 / month)Do not pay for proctoring you will not switch on
Match the billing model to your exam calendar, not to the vendor’s preferred packaging.

What should you ask any vendor before signing?

  1. What is the all-in cost per completed proctored session at our stated annual volume, in INR?
  2. Is proctoring metered separately? If yes, how many units are included and what does the next tier cost?
  3. Is there a floor, a minimum commitment, or an entry bundle? Do unused credits expire?
  4. What is billed outside the licence, such as implementation, integration, migration, training or per-exam support?
  5. Are reports, exports and result analytics included, or are they a paid add-on?
  6. What happens at renewal? Ask for the uplift cap in writing.
  7. Can we run a real exam before paying? A vendor confident in the product will let you.

If you want to see how those answers look on a live platform, XAM's pricing is published on the homepage and the free tier runs 20 real sessions without a card.
